Last Tuesday a founder from Pune sat across from me in Ras Al Khaimah with a spreadsheet open on his phone. He sells turmeric, cumin and packaged masala blends. "I have buyers in Nairobi and Lagos," he said. "Do I need two companies, or one?"
One, I told him. Set it up in the UAE, warehouse here, and ship both ways.
He looked unconvinced, so I walked him through a single container. Follow it with me.
The numbers behind the idea
The UAE's non-oil trade with Africa reached around USD 112 billion in 2024, up 34 per cent on 2023, according to figures carried by the state news agency WAM. In September 2026 Gulf News, citing WAM, put the 2025 total at about USD 158 billion, a further 41.6 per cent rise. Africa now takes 15.5 per cent of all UAE non-oil trade, up from 10.8 per cent in 2019.
Here is a smaller number. Nigeria's non-oil trade with the UAE grew from USD 4.3 billion in 2024 to USD 5 billion in 2025, the UAE ambassador in Abuja said in May 2026.
The trade agreements, as they stand today
The UAE is signing Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreements across the continent. Mauritius came first: signed in July 2024 and in force since 2 April 2025, per WAM. Kenya signed on 14 January 2025, and its National Assembly moved the ratification report forward in November 2025. The Republic of the Congo signed on 8 April 2025. The Democratic Republic of the Congo signed on 2 February 2026 and Gabon on 6 February 2026, both reported by The National. In all, Gulf News counted 38 CEPAs concluded and 18 in force as of September 2026.
One honest point here. A CEPA cuts duty on goods that originate in the partner country. Indian spices repacked in a UAE warehouse remain Indian in origin, so they enter Kenya under Kenya's normal tariff, not the CEPA rate. The agreements matter most if you manufacture or substantially transform in the UAE. For pure re-export, the UAE's advantage is logistics, finance and proximity, and those are real.
The ports, neutrally
Jebel Ali handled about 15.5 million TEU in 2025, Lloyd's List reports. Khalifa Port in Abu Dhabi ranked 39th in the Lloyd's List Top 100 for 2025, with Abu Dhabi's container volumes up 21.6 per cent. Ras Al Khaimah's Saqr Port is the largest dry bulk port in the region, with a 350,000 TEU container terminal operated by Hutchison Ports and a Saqr 2.0 expansion under way, according to RAK Ports' October 2025 capability statement.
New East Africa links are appearing. GT Lines announced a Khorfakkan to Dar es Salaam express service with a first sailing on 17 August 2026: two vessels, a ten-day frequency and a nine-day transit. Direct sailings from Jebel Ali to Mombasa are typically around eight to eleven days.
Follow the container: warehouse to Mombasa
Our Pune founder ships a 40-foot container of spices from Nhava Sheva to the UAE. It enters a free-zone warehouse. Goods inside a free zone are treated as outside the UAE customs territory, so the 5 per cent GCC duty is suspended for as long as they stay there.
In the warehouse his team repacks: 500-gram retail packs with Swahili labels for Kenya, 25-kilogram sacks for a Lagos distributor. He now holds stock for several buyers instead of booking a full container per order from India.
A 20-foot box with the Kenya packs goes out on an East Africa service. He files a re-export declaration and attaches the Indian certificate of origin, the packing list and the Kenyan buyer's import documents. Re-exports to non-GCC countries leave without UAE duty. Nine to eleven days later the container is in Mombasa.
Follow the container: warehouse to Lagos
The Lagos box takes longer. West Africa sailings from the Gulf usually involve a transhipment, so he builds in extra weeks. His Nigerian buyer pays against documents through a UAE bank, which the buyer trusts more readily than an account in a country he has never visited.
Think about what this means for you. One entity, one warehouse, one set of books, and two African markets served with partial loads, faster replenishment and payment through a hub both sides know.
How to sequence the first year
- Register the trading company and secure warehouse space in a free zone near your chosen port.
- Ship one consolidated container from India and sell it into two or three test markets.
- Appoint one distributor per country before you commit to repeat sailings.
- Learn one country's import rules deeply before adding a second.
Why now
The UAE's total non-oil trade passed AED 3.8 trillion in 2025, up 26.8 per cent, and re-exports reached AED 830.2 billion, up 15.7 per cent, according to WAM in January 2026. Re-export is the core business here, and the shipping lines are adding African loops to serve it.
One honest caution
Africa is 54 markets, not one. Documentation, port handling and payment terms differ between Mombasa and Lagos, and freight to West Africa is slower and dearer. In my experience, exporters who start with one East African country and one West African country, and resist the third until the first two pay, do well.
Your next step: write down your one East African and one West African market, and send me the product line. Which African market are you eyeing? Tell me in the comments. In a coming post I will cover how the same UAE entity uses the India-UAE CEPA for the inbound leg.
